Hoops!

Made for the York Castle Museum, these two hoops following were studied, samples and made for an exhibition entitled ‘Shaping the Body’.

The beautiful Striped hoop has been based on a striped hoop from the Edinburgh Collections Centre and though we are unable to show any of our photos taken from that study session (sorry guys!) we have implemented all of the original design features. The various striped strips that make up the Cane channels, the chunky red stitching, the upper-cane rim in it’s design, etc have all been replicated from the original. The only thing we changed is we made it a little smaller to match the Oblong Hoop size in our collection.
The Blue Pocket Hoops have been taken from an image we found online from the Nordiska Museum. They’re strong rich blue was incredibly attractive and we managed to find a lovely linen that matched it perfectly.

Both hoops have been made using centre cane, steamed into shape and manipulated to make the hoop create the shape. Cane is perfect for hoops as it’s light but not wibbly and therefore holds it’s shape wonderfully. This makes a good reliable surface for the dress and won’t be manipulated by any weight of cloth.
