This is quite an interesting page. Laver, here gives some early examples of the ‘sack’ gown. He uses a portrait by Godfrey Kneller and Vanderbank as examples of early sacks (also known as Robe a la Francais).

In this section, Laver talks about the decrease of French influence on fashion and an increase in a more English Country style. He mentions how the cut of mens coats became simpler. The image at the top is entitled ‘The ‘a l’Anglais chez la Princesse de Conti’ by Michel-Barthelemy Ollivier from 1766. Only half of it is here but it’s a beautiful piece of work with many intriguing details in their dress.
